Review:

Lightsucker's debut album – Zammal – is a hard hitting mix of Sludge, Stoner and Doom as the band feel heavily influenced by Church Of Misery. That's no bad thing as Lightsucker play a more rough and ready kind of Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal. Tomi's vocals move from clean based sounds to a more sinister death pitched growl at times.

There are a ton of great riffs within the albums 39 minute running time. It can be very bleak and desolate at times. It took me a few listens to actually enjoy the album. So don't go expecting an easy listen as Lightsucker aren't that type of band. The albums opening two tracks – 1% and Solitary Confinement – show you what to expect. Fast-paced riffs, angry vocals with a sense of demented fun. You can hear the Church Of Misery vibe from the start but Lightsucker still have a few tricks of their own to impress you with.

The lyrics could of done with more work on a few of the songs. Apart from that minor complaint, Lightsucker have created a filth ridden musical odyssey that delves into the darker areas of Sludge/Stoner Metal with the DOOM element being the main driving force here. The production on the album is impressive through out. I wouldn't expect anything less from Argonauta Records.

Songs such as Control Zone, Written While Stoned and Sulfur & Jimson Weed are perhaps the stand-out tracks on the album as Lightsucker start to create their own musical identity and show people what they're made of.

Zammal isn't going to win any awards for originality but for heavy, brutal and bleak based Sludge/Stoner/Doom Metal madness, you will find this very hard to beat. Zammal is a promising start from Lightsucker. Give Lightsucker a few more releases and they have the potential to be a real a force within the Sludge/Doom Metal world. Until then, sit back and enjoy this awesome slab of heavy riffs!!!
